Capitalism of ‘Women’s day’.

Your social class determined where you spent your International Women’s day celebrations 2024. It was raining events dubbed ‘Women day’ a ticket going for 108 USD to 10 USD in Nairobi Kenya. Classy and flashy events which were graced by the who’s and who’s in the Kenyan upper and middle class women, and totally nothing for the low class women.

I have to emphasize on class to show the difference in access not only to information but also resources. There is nothing wrong with having an event, but it loses value and weight when it is at the expense of what you keep on advocating for Gender equality and women empowerment. It is basically to say that there are resources for those who are able to access, if you can not, owe unto you mate!

The theme clearly stated Invest in Women: Accelerate progress. Guess progress will have to delay just a little bit. I did not see any one offer free courses on financial growth to young ladies who cannot pay 15000ksh to access a one day event. I did not even see one group of empowered able women go to the ground and share information, they all gathered up in posh areas for some wine and golf. It sounds bitter but such a day should be aimed at giving a helping hand and not squandering on already well financed persons.

Is it selfishness? Lack of strategic leadership? I don’t know. We have so many pressing issues in our society from femicide, rape in schools, poverty, lack of proper sanitation just to name a few, its arrogant of our women leaders and business moguls too. There is no principle of altruism or even the least concern coming from our so called role models, leaders and movers. I stand corrected if there was any event that happened with a aim of giving back, and fighting for the rights of unprivileged women, only Nadia Mukami’s through her foundation at Nyayo stadium.

In a nutshell, Every Woman for herself, God for us all. Get moving girl, empower yourself! Well, too much talk, let me plug you with platforms where you can access information to help you progress, maybe you can share with fellow women:
