Altars before Accountability.
Breaking news, the president is building a church using his own money, that will cost 1.2 billion Kenyan shillings. Let that sink in, how much that money is. He says it public and confidently that he has no apologies to make , broadcasting it like a national achievement, can we all clap at the back, make it loud and long enough.
Well, a church is not bad, but at what cost, and why at this time? First, statehouse is not personal property so building a church with his own money is a big fat lie. It doesn’t make sense, not unless he doesn’t plan on leaving the state house anytime soon, which as per the constitution and election dates, is in less than 800 days.
Second, why is it a church, only meant for Christians. Kenya is not a Religion state, we have very many denominations. Does that mean when we have a Muslim president they should put a mosque. Everyone gets an altar and the land for building is available at statehouse, no fee just a good 1.2 billion from your own pocket .
Third and most important, why are our priorities misplaced? The health sector is a mess, the education sector requires a lot of funding for the transition of senior schools set to happen in 6 months. Oh! the menace that is youth unemployment is at an all time high. 1.2 billion can fund 2000 start ups, build infrastructure for sports and arts’, pay doctors and nurses, but hey let’s bless the presidents backyard.
This is not about Faith, it is about priorities. It is how the loudest projects will always hide the biggest failures. Policy priorities? We thought they meant healthcare, housing, education, jobs.
Turns out, it was heavenly infrastructure.
